Summer is officially in full swing, and along with that comes the first long weekend of the season! Canada Day is an opportunity to spend time with friends and family, allowing you to get out and explore your city. Celebrate great weather and a bit of time off with these St Catharines Canada Day activities! From swimming, to fireworks, to taking in a flick, there’s plenty to keep you busy this July 1st weekend.
Canada Day at Rennie Park
If you have little ones you’ll want to stop by beautiful Renni Park in Port Dalhousie for some great free activities. A rock wall, bouncers, kids’ crafts, buskers, and temporary tattoos are some of the fun you can expect. The local Lions Club is also providing hot dogs and burgers to keep you fueled while you enjoy your weekend. Rennie Park’s annual St Catharines Canada Day festivities have become a wonderful tradition to look forward to in the city. They feature live music and some of their past acts have included home-grown Motown band The Montebellos! The fun gets started at Rennie Park this July 1st. Visit here for more details.
Enjoy a mesmerising show courtesy of the Port Dalhousie Lions Club for free! View the show from Jaycee Park or Rennie Park starting at 10pm on July 1st. Other fireworks happening in the region include Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls. The recommended viewing location is the Table Rock Visitors Centre. If you are willing to spend a little money to get a truly spectacular view, we suggest taking the Hornblower Niagara Cruise to watch the bursts of light and colour reflected over the lake. Whatever you decide, make sure to include fireworks in your St Catharines Canada Day activities this weekend!
The predicted weather for this weekend in St Catharines is hot and sunny, so you’ll want to cool down in between all the excitement! Luckily, several pools around the city are offering free swimming over the weekend. The city’s oldest pool, Lion Dunc Schooley Pool features some shady areas but also plenty of sun to soak in. It’s the first weekend in St Catharines that outdoor pools are open, so take advantage of the good weather and stop by! If you prefer an indoor swim, visit the state-of-the-art Kiwanis Aquatics Centre. The double pool design, one rectangular and one irregular, accommodates both serious and more leisurely swimmers. Movie Screenings at FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre
The Film House, St Catharines newest and only licensed cinema, is devoted to bringing diverse narratives to the screen that highlight the variety within the lived Candian experience. This Friday and Saturday they’re showing two great films that tell very different stories about Canadians. The Grizzlies is an award-winning film based on the true story of a group of Inuit teens who form a lacrosse team in their isolated Arctic community. Wild Nights with Emily explores the previously obscure romantic life of one of Canada’s most beloved writers, Emily Dickinson. Either of these home-grown films are a great way to spend your St Catharines Canada Day festivities!
We hope we’ve given you a few ideas for how to spend your extra time this weekend with these St Catharines Canada activities.
